Embarking on a journey to enhance your stairs? Fantastic! In this guide, we'll simplify the process of installing a stair runner, making it accessible to everyone.
Gather Your Gear!
Before diving in, ensure you have the necessary tools and materials: a staple gun, measuring tape, underlay, a utility knife, and, of course, your chosen stair runner. Having the right equipment at hand sets the stage for a smooth installation.
Style Matters!
Selecting a stair runner that complements your home decor is crucial. Consider colors, patterns, and materials that resonate with your aesthetic. This small addition can make a significant impact on your entire living space.
Measure Twice, Cut Once!
Avoid costly mistakes by accurately measuring your stairs. This step ensures you purchase the right amount of runner and helps with a seamless installation process.
Clear the Path!
Prep your stairs by removing any existing carpet or debris. A clean slate ensures your new runner adheres securely and looks flawless.
The Foundation Matters!
Lay down the underlay to provide cushioning and protect your stairs. This step ensures both comfort underfoot and longevity for your stair runner.
Start at the Bottom!
Begin installing your stair runner from the bottom, securing it with a staple gun as you go. Ensure the runner is centered and straight for a professional finish.
Staple it Right!
Carefully staple the runner along the edges, ensuring a snug fit. Be mindful of tension – too loose or too tight can affect the overall appearance and lifespan.
Trim with Precision!
Trim any excess material and tuck the edges neatly. This step adds the final touch, giving your stairs a polished and refined appearance.
Keep it Fresh!
Maintaining your stair runner is a breeze. Regular vacuuming and prompt cleaning of spills will ensure it stays looking pristine for years to come.
]]>Creating a continuous and seamless carpeted space adds a touch of elegance to any room. While some spaces may require a carpet installation in multiple pieces, proper seaming techniques can make the transition nearly invisible. In this guide, we'll walk you through the process of seaming carpets to achieve a flawless and cohesive look.
Before starting the seaming process, gather the following materials:
Carpet Seam Tape: Double-sided adhesive tape designed for carpet seaming.
Carpet Cutter or Utility Knife: To trim excess carpet and ensure clean edges.
Straight Edge or T-square: For precise cutting and alignment.
Hot Melt Seam Iron: For activating the adhesive in the seam tape.
Seam Roller: To press down the seams and ensure a strong bond.
Ensure that the carpet pieces to be seamed are clean, dry, and acclimated to the room's temperature. Lay the carpet out and match the patterns or textures if applicable.
Use a straight edge or T-square to create straight and clean edges where the carpet pieces will be seamed. Trim any excess yarn or backing carefully.
Work in a well-lit area to accurately match patterns and textures.
Take your time during the seaming process to achieve precision.
Use caution when using hot tools and follow safety guidelines provided by the manufacturer.
By following these steps and tips, you can seamlessly seam carpets together, creating a continuous and visually appealing look in any space. If you have specific questions or need further assistance, don't hesitate to reach out to our team for expert advice.

Review: "I wanted a rug to lighten up the wood tones in my formal living room. This rug matches well with dark hardwood floors. Rug is thin so I added a mat underneath. It arrived pretty wrinkled. I aired it out for a few days and placed heavy books on the creases, most of them went away. I'm happy overall with the rug." —Megane

]]>BENEFITS OF WOOL
Wool carpets have outstanding easy-care properties. They’re flame and stain resistant, as well as extremely resilient. These are not achievable characteristics for other chemically treated floor coverings.
Naturally Flame Retardant
The high moisture content of wool fibers, along with its protein constituents, provide wool carpets with excellent natural flame resistance. Wool fibers will not support combustion and are very difficult to ignite due to its self-extinguishable abilities.
Naturally Stain Resistant
The surface of this wool is covered by a thin protective membrane which gives this fiber the ability to shed water. This membrane prevents water from readily penetrating the individual wool fibers. When you consider that 80% of the carpet stains are water-based, you begin to realize how important this property is.
Naturally Resilient
Each wool fiber has a three-dimensional spiraling crimp which gives it natural elasticity. This elasticity means that a wool fiber can stretch up to 30% more than its original length and then bounce back; like a miniature spring.
Wool is a non-allergenic fiber. It does not promote the growth of bacteria, dust mites, or give off chemical emission.
Hard-wearing and easy to clean, it’s no surprise that wool has been a mainstay in rug and carpet weaving for centuries! This versatile fiber is made in a wide range of attractive patterns, from classic florals to bold geometric designs.

Promising review: "The rug was rolled and packaged in a waterproof type material on the outside, with a heavy plastic covering on the inside. Very well-protected from dirt and moisture. One thing I researched about quality rugs said to look for the pattern to show up on the back side of the rug. This shows the rug is woven and the fibers are not glued down. The pattern shows up perfectly on the underside of this rug. The colours are lovely and the feel of the fibers under your feet is so soft which you would expect with a handknotted wool rug. Very tightly knotted, too. This is a very nice quality rug." —Rita.

Hand-tufted rugs and hand-hooked rugs are produced with a tufting gun. Working much like an oversized sewing needly, the gun pushes and pulls threads and yarn through a scrim - a pre-woven grid foundation. With a hooked rug, the loops of yarn are left intact to form a characteristically "knobby" pile. In a tufted rug, the taps of loops are sheared to expose the thread ends for a softer and plusher pile.
A flat-weave rug is constructed without a pile. Here, colored weft yarns are woven through the warps to create the pattern. There are numerous varieties of flat weaves: kilims, dhurries and soumaks to name a few.
A split-weave kilim is constructed when colored weft yarns are woven though the warps to create the pattern and the thread is pulled through the warp only as far as the pattern and color dictate. Then the thread is turned back on itself to go the direction in which it came finishing the same side on which it started. Different colored threads meet but do not join, creating the design.
Loom woven rugs are woven on looms and they are then hand washed and hand finished, utilizing time-honored techniques, to accentuate the beauty of each individual rug. Loom-woven rugs have the texture, look and feel of a high-quality handmade piece without the high cost normally associated with handmade rugs.
Powerlooms enable rug makers to produce floor coverings at a much faster rate than anything woven by hand. Though these early machine made rugs were by no means as detailed as those done by an artisan's hands, they brought affordability and accessibility to a much larger market. Since the initial development of the powerloom, manufacturers have strived to re-create the look of a fine handmade carpet with varying degrees of success. When purchasing a powerloomed rug, remember, its not just about price!
Most important is that your rug is constructed of quality materials, like wool, natural fibers, or lasting synthetics dense enough to ensure- not only that the product lasts- but that it wears beautifully. Hand finishing or carving, featured in many Tapis rugs powerloomed rugs, are sure signs of quality. A finely powerloomed rug is superior in detail and durability to one that is poorly made. Tapis' powerloomed rugs are woven on state-of-the-art Wilton looms, known for their ability to produce incredibly intricate designs and superiorly blended colours. These electronically-driven looms are also produce two rugs simultaneously, which are then cut apart, known as face-to-face weaving.

From the most current data, Benjamin Moor colour and design experts found 30% increase in the usage of blacks for interior and exterior use. “What was really interesting , the No. 1 and No. 2 blacks were actually a really deep grey. But in the recent report, the No. 1 colour in blacks was just pure black.”
In other words, homeowners aren’t fooling around. They’re going for it, also choosing such inky shades as “Midnight Oil,” which in 2017 didn’t even make Benjamin Moore’s top 25 black hues. This year, it jumped to one of the top-selling blacks, and it wasn’t a colour that they were actively promoting.
Colour and design experts say it speaks to how confident people are in using those really deep, true blacks.
Black homes have been cropping up in Venice and Silver Lake, areas considered to be more architecturally progressive, but they can also be found elsewhere in Los Angeles, according to designers and real estate agents.
And yet, a black home can recede and even appear to vanish. For all its drama and power, black is forever mysterious — a color (if we must call it that) that, quite simply, eats light.
Resistance is futile, come to the dark side — for black is indeed trending, beyond its role as a timeless standard. Homeowners are gaining new confidence with its use, most notably and boldly on exteriors, testing black’s powers of sophistication, modernity, minimalism and seduction.

For a living room to feel pulled together, most designers will tell you, it needs a rug.
But rugs can be expensive. And because a large-scale item like that is going to have a big effect on the way a room looks and feels, choosing one can be intimidating. The right rug may live in your home for decades. The wrong rug will serve as a daily reminder of the money you wasted — and the money you’ll have to spend if you want to replace it.
And getting it wrong is all too easy, given the range of materials, colors, patterns and sizes available. Finding the ideal rug, observed the New York-based interior designer Celerie Kemble, is a “complicated puzzle.”
To help you solve that puzzle, we asked Ms. Kemble and our in house-designers at Tapis Rugs & Carpet for advice.
There is no rule that says you have to limit yourself to a single rug in the living room. Designers often use multiple rugs in larger rooms to define different areas. So how do you know whether one or a few is best?
Smaller spaces, and living rooms enclosed by walls and doorways, usually benefit from a single large rug.
“I’m often dealing with apartments where the goal is to expand the sense of usable space in a living room,” Ms. Kemble said. In those cases, “I usually want to use one rug, and make it as big as I possibly can.”
Sprawling, open-concept spaces, like lofts, are more likely to benefit from multiple rugs, which help ground disparate groupings of furniture and can be used to separate a living area from a dining or media area, in the absence of walls.
Another option is to layer rugs on top of each other, with a single large, plain rug on the bottom to cover most of the floor, and smaller decorative rugs on top to anchor different seating areas.
It is important to work around a room’s obstructions when planning a rug purchase.
“We always start with the practical and then get to the decorative, while considering the architecture and mechanics” of a home, said Jesse Carrier, a principal of Carrier and Company, a New York interior design firm. “Are there doorways and door swings to consider? Is there any floor grille for HVAC that you don’t want to cover? Is there a fireplace where you have to deal with a hearth?”
After taking these details into account, consider circulation around the seating areas.
“There’s nothing worse than being forced to walk on the perimeter of a rug,” Ms. Kemble said, with one foot on and one foot off.
Choose a size that either completely covers the walkway or leaves the floor exposed where people need to pass by. Then decide how far beyond the furniture the rug should extend. A common way to size a rug is to ensure that it reaches underneath all four feet of all the furniture.
Or you could use a smaller rug that runs under the front feet of the sofas and chairs, and stops there. Just make sure that smaller objects at the rug’s edges, like end tables and floor lamps, are completely on or off the rug, Mr. Carrier said: “You don’t want unbalanced, rocking end tables every time you put something down.”
What about small rugs that float in the center of a room, untethered by sofa and chair legs? Many experts advise against them.
“Small rugs look a little bit lost and unfinished,” said Sara Dehghan, the marketing director for the Tapis Rugs & Carpet, in Toronto. “It can feel like a postage stamp, which is not so pleasing for the eye.”
A boldly patterned rug can serve as the defining feature of a living area, but because it has so much impact, it’s a choice that requires courage. Deciding whether to go with a graphic statement rug or something more understated comes down to personal preference, as well as your overall design vision and where your home is.
“In the city, oftentimes clients will want to invest in an antique carpet from an auction or one of the great rug vendors as a showpiece,” Mr. Carrier said. But in country homes and beach houses, “we’ll often do some sort of sisal, sea-grass or coir carpet, because it’s a little more informal and rustic.”
If you decide to shop for a patterned rug, there are endless choices available, from free-form contemporary designs to more traditional ones. But if you’d rather keep it simple, there are plenty of opportunities to introduce pattern at a smaller scale.
“For more laid-back, Zen environments, there are fantastically beautiful sisals with patterns in them, like herringbones and subtle stripes,” said Richard Mishaan, a New York-based interior designer. “To dress them up a bit, add a fabulous binding in leather or suede. It doesn’t increase the price enormously, but it’s very chic and beautiful.”
Rugs come in many materials, including plant-based fibers like cotton, linen, sisal, jute and allo; downy, natural fibers like wool, silk and mohair; and synthetic materials like nylon and solution-dyed acrylic. There are also nonwoven rugs made from stitched-together materials like cowhide.
Each offers a different look and feel, with varying characteristics related to how well the materials wear and how easy they are to clean. They also range widely in price.
Rugs made from plant-based materials are often among the most affordable and offer an easy, casual look. But different fibers have different durability: Cotton and linen, for instance, age fairly quickly, while sisal and allo can take more abuse.
“We’ve had some disasters with linen,” Mr. Carrier said, “which is very, very beautiful” — at least when it’s new. But because it is easily damaged by wear and spills, he added, “we’ve had to replace a lot of linen rugs in our time, and now avoid them like the plague.”
Allo, on the other hand, is “very cleanable and doesn’t retain stains,” he said.
One of the most popular materials is wool, which can offer a range of looks depending on how it’s handled, from thin, flat weaves to hairy, hand-knotted shags. Wool tends to be more expensive than most plant-based materials, but it is stain resistant, softer underfoot and durable enough to last for centuries.
“Wool has lanolin in it, which makes it a very cleanable, stain-resistant fiber,” said Bethany Hopf, a sales manager at the House of Tai Ping carpet company, in New York. “When you spill, it sits on top for a little while before it will actually absorb,” which gives you time for cleanup.
Even when a spill soaks in, she said, “we have a lot of success getting stains out.”
The same cannot be said for silk, which is generally more expensive and delicate, but has a softer feel and a lustrous sheen. Some upscale rugs are made entirely from silk, while others combine wool and silk to create various effects.
In patterned rugs, “very often we have a wool background and then highlight the motif with silk, because it helps it pop,” said Sara Dehghan, of Tapis Rugs & Carpet. “You can have lots of fun playing with those two textures, because the silk has a lot of sheen to it.”
But Ms. Kemble cautioned that mixed-fiber rugs can be difficult to clean: “Silk can’t take water, but wool needs water to be cleaned. So when you have silk-and-wool mixes, it creates hard-to-sort problems once there’s a spill.”
It’s tempting to bring a rug home and put it down immediately, but there’s a step you shouldn’t skip: putting a nonslip rug pad underneath.
Cut the pad to a size slightly smaller than the carpet. A general rule is that it should be trimmed about an inch shorter than the rug on all sides, to provide maximum grip while preventing a visible change in level where the rug transitions from pad to floor.
Rug pads offer a touch of additional cushioning, Ms. Hopf said. But their real utility is more “about keeping it in place and preserving the life of the carpet,” she said.
In other words, it ensures that your new rug won’t slide like a banana peel.
Area rugs normally come in eight different construction types:
HAND-KNOTTED: The most common hand-knotting traditions are Persian, Turkish and Tibetan. The rug begins with a background of vertical warp threads and weavers then uses individual knots of horizontal weft threads to create the design. If you are looking for an heirloom piece this is the best of the best. You can also expect to pay a premium for this labor intensive type of rug.
HAND-LOOMED: This rug is created on a traditional loom. A vertical warp is created and then a shuttle is used to apply the weft. Loomed patterns may have a loop or cut pile surface texture with an appearance similar to hand-tufted rugs. Unlike hand-tufted rugs, these rugs do not require a backing.
HAND-TUFTED: A canvas is stretched tightly over a frame and the design is drawn by hand onto the canvas. A tufting gun is then used to push yarn through the canvas to cover the entire surface area. Tufted rugs can have a cut or loop pile. After tufting, a latex backing with canvas is applied.
HAND-HOOKED: A technique used in hand-tufted rugs to create a loop texture.
HAND-WOVEN: Textures and patterns are created by weaving different yarns through a vertical warp.
HAND-CRAFTED: A rug that is handmade using techniques such as piecing, stitching, die cutting, etc. Hand-crafted can describe hair-on-hide and leather rugs, cut felt rugs, embroidered rugs, etc.
FLATWEAVE: Flatweave is often used to describe kilims and dhurries. A hand-woven construction that typically has no pile and is reversible.
MACHINE-MADE: These rugs are constructed on large, automated looms. The designs are created by lifting the weft yarns to the surface.
Fiber is no small element of an area rug. While you might balk at the hefty price tags, certain fibers will ensure that your rug looks beautiful - even after years of constant use. Depending on your lifestyle and household, you have different fiber options available to you, including the following:
WOOL: Wool rugs are an excellent choice for high traffic areas - living rooms and hallways - or spill-prone spaces. If you want a rug that is durable, long-lasting, and naturally stain resistant, you really can’t go wrong with a wool rug.
SILK: If you want a truly luxurious rug for your bedroom, pick a silk rug. Just remember they don’t do well with moisture, can be quite expensive, and are less sturdy than a wool rug.
COTTON: Cotton rugs are popular among my vegan clients, including flat weaves. They are machine-washable but require a rug pad to keep them from slipping around the room.
JUTE AND SISAL: Made of natural materials, jute and sisal rugs are a fun, casual look for a family room or breakfast nook. Keep in mind that jute is coarse and firm, which makes it uncomfortable underfoot. Sisal, however, has a smoother and finer surface.
POLYPROPYLENE: Made from polymer fibers fabricated to look like wool, sisal, and other common rug fibers, these rugs are both durable and soft. They are designed for superior comfort and resilience, making them versatile and extremely easy to clean. For homes with children and pets, I highly recommend a polypropylene rug.
There are a gazillion blogs and Pinterest boards out there about rug size. To save you some time, here is the summary: Get the largest size that will fit in your room. All furniture should sit on the rug, which keeps it off the wall and in a tight conversational configuration.

While they generally feature antique elements, transitional rugs exude a distinctly modern fair. Characterized by an open and non-period-specific look, they coordinate equally well with traditional or contemporary decor.
]]>Unlike all previous rug types presented in this volume, transitional rugs are mainly of recent vintage. The latest in rug design trends, they integrate classic and contemporary elements in the same piece. Their patterns are generally based on featured of antique rugs specifically Persian rugs.
Decorative motifs are also often inspired by antique textiles, such as brocades and adapted to the rug medium. Colors are chosen from all across the spectrum purely for decorative impact. As with most newly produced rugs, designs and colours are generally produced in a number of colorways and sizes, allowing for easier selection.
Custom designs and colorations are also often available. Transitional rugs are hand-knotted, flatwoven or executed in a combination of pile and flateweave, or "high-low" textures. They are handwoven with a wide variety of materials including wool, silk, cotton, bamboo silk and often in combination. Such versatility of texture creates a virtually limitless range of possibility for these handcrafted products--a rug featuring the same color and design scheme will wield a dramatically different impact when hand-knotted in wool than when executed in high & low pile wool and silk for instance. Transitional rugs of the highest quality materials, dyes are vegetable and are the most sough after.

These rugs are typically Tibetan and or Nepalese quality.
Below you will find little more about them...
Tibetan / Nepalese carpet weaving in the Himalayan region is known to an age-old tradition practice. Mainly vivid hues, simple designs, and a fine weave.
Following China's suppression of Tibetan nationalism in 1959, many of its citizens settled in Nepal, where they established carpet industries whose products were exported to Europe beginning in the mid-1970s. Tibetan rugs --mainly finely woven pieces with stylized patterns--began to emerge in North America in the 1980s.
Tibetan carpets have become highly sophisticated in quality. Materials including wool, silk, hemp, and nettle are often used in Tibetan rugs. Lustrous Tibetan wool with its high lanolin content is often hand carded and hand spun and distinguishes these rugs in the marketplace.
Tibetans are generally borderless, without visible fringe, and range from being monochromatic to featuring impressionistic patterns. It is possible to order a rug of virtually any color, design, texture or size thanks to Nepal's unique approach to customizing rugs to client demand. Many Tibetan collections have been created by today's most prestigious interior designers for use in contemporary interiors.

]]>Probably first produced in the Middles Ages, abriz rugs exemplify Persia's city-weave tradition and their designs still are the genesis for patterns reproduced today.
Situated in northwest Iran on an ancient trade route to the Black Sea and Caucasus, the city of Tabriz was Persia's first capital under the Sefavid dynasty (1502-1736) when court weaving flourished along with calligraphy, miniature painting, and tilework. Together with Kashan, Kirman, and Isfahan, Tabriz became one of Persia's most reputed weaving centers. The rug export boomed to the West originated in Tabriz in the 1850's where foreign-owned establishments were built.
Among the first special-order carpets tailored to European and U.S. demand, nineteenth-century Tabrizes were often comissioned in the large sizes in an impressive variety of colours and designs unlike their other city-woven counterparts including kirman and kashan which are characterized by a more specific style associated with their respective provenances.
Crafted in Tabriz and outlying villages with a finely woven short pile, Tabriz wool carpets feature various Persian designs including floral and animal elements often arranged around one or more medallions and executed in rich, subtle hues. Some examples display poetic quotes or other Farsi (Persian) inscriptions executed in calligraphy placed in cartouches and borders.
Many garden pieces depict concepts of paradise - luxuriant flora, birds and animals. Late-nineteenth-to early-twentieth century rugs woven by the noted local weaver Haji Jalil are known as Haji Jalil Tabrizes and are sought after for their earth tones and subtle designs. Antique silk Tabrizes often feature pictorial or panel designs of small squares with floral motifs.

Sought after for their classic allure that defies fashion trends, Herizes were woven in northwestern Persian villages beginning in the early nineteenth century. The Heriz weaving district was stimulated by nearby Tabrizi merchants who marketed these rugs to Europe and the United States, where they became popular in the latter half of the nineteenth century.
Destined for Western buyers solely as decorative floor coverings, the coarsely woven Herizes are most often produced in room-sized dimensions. Herizes dated from before 1910 are often coined "Serapi", a term alluding to the finest and oldest weave but often used to stimulate sales of newer rugs. This term does not designate provenance; in fact, the term Serapi is also indicative of a design scheme characterized by a field with sparse elements, a large scale medallion, and soft, muted hues of brick red.
Typical Herizes, on the other hand, feature many elements in the field, a large scale rectilinear medallion, and corner spandrels exhibiting a stylized leaf and palmette design within a border filled with a Herati repeat. Pieces with all over patterning are rare. Post-1930 Herizes reveal busier and more crowded patterns. Associated with Herizes due to their close region of origin are late nineteenth-century rustic Bakshaishes, which often feature a plain field with an unusual central medallion, such as an elongated diamond filled with small geometric repeats. The frequent use of undyed natural camel wool is another characteristic of many Bakshaishes.
Nineteenth - and early - twentieth- century pieces feature madder grounds with indigo hues and accents of rose, ivory, and khaki. In the 1930s, harsh synthetic dyes came into use, which was often fugitive and is responsible for the muddied look of many carpets from that era.
Many of today's new Heriz- inspired rugs-reinterpreted in most rug-producing countries including India, China, Pakistan, and Egypt-mark a return to pure, sparse traditional elements and feature vegetable dyes characteristic of their older counterparts.

1. Renowned for their dramatic colours and geometric designs Caucasian rugs were woven primarily on wool foundations and were designed for indigenous use, the product of a centuries-old nomadic weaving tradition in the mountains of the Caucasus, between the Black and Caspian Seas.
2. They are found in small size area rugs and as runners.
Dominated at various period by the Turks, Persian and Russians, this region was inhabited by people including Kurds, Armenians and Azerbeijani Turks, complicating the attribution of specific provenances to Caucasian rugs' various types.
Kazaks are paramoount among the coarsely woven medium to high-pile weatern Caucasian wavings. Crafted by Armenians, Azeri Turks and Kurds (not by a fictitious kazak tribe), they exhibit simple, large-scale patterns with medallions in contrasting colours.
Kazak's numerous subtypes include Star Kazaks, Pinwheels Kazaks, and Borchalu Kazaks, Karabaghs, another prominent western caucasian group, display patterns ranging from boldy geometric to finer floral persian and Savonnerie - inspired.
From the eastern Caucasus come more finely knotted rugs with short to medium pile and smaller intricate repeats. Kubas feature shades of blue and salmon red and patterns including Chi Chis with repeats arranged in rows and Perpedils exhibiting "rams's horn" designs. Best known among the finely woven Shirvans are Lesghi Star and Akstafas.
Nineteeth- century Caucasians are among the most prized of rug types. Their limited supply has triggered production of new pieces in a range of qualities in countries including China, Armenia, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Like those of neighbouring Algeria and Tunisia, Moroccan flat-weaves and pile rugs are the fruit of Berber tribes whose presence predates the Arab invasion of the seventh century and who continue to inhabit the Middle and High Atlas Mountains.
Berbers have been practicing the art of creating wool flat-weaves and pile rugs for centuries, and their original purpose was for domestic use as bedding, pillow covers, tent sidewalls and floor coverings.
Broadly characterized by their vibrant hues and dazzling geometric motifs, these tribal artifacts are sought after for their modernist aesthetic and appeal.
Berber flat-weaves, including those of the Zemmour tribes, feature strongly graphic lozenges, rectangles and stepped lines that have captivated artists including Eugene Delacroix, Henri Matisse, and Paul Klee. Frequently arranged in plainweave strips, these flatweaves sometimes feature knotted pile. Most renowned among Berber pile rugs are the brightly colored Moroccan High Atlas rugs, characterized by symmetrical compositions and often exhibiting a variety of geometric configurations with motifs including squares, oblongs, and diamonds.
These all-wool foundation rugs are coarsely hand-knotted to enhance softness and insulation. Similarly, the Middle Atlas Beni Ouarain tribes' Thick-pile rugs also featured abstract designs, but are woven from undyed ivory, brown and black wool. Other Middle Atlas pieces feature an asymmetrical format of transverse panels with variations on the diamond motif.
Moroccan rugs are enjoying a recent renewal of attention for their ability to blend well with contemporary Western interiors. While these rugs continue to be woven in Morocco, other countries of origin, namely Nepal and Turkey, are adeptly producing them in all sizes. Many of these new "Moroccan" rugs follow the colour and design styles of their traditional forbears whereas other feature only loosely inspired design elements in new colour ways to meet North American demand.

These flat tapestry-woven carpets emerged in 1770-80, when royal support transformed the moribund mural tapestry industry of Aubusson, a town in central France, into one designed for floor coverings. Woven from cartoons executed by famous painters and destined for royalty and aristocracy, Aubusson followed styles endorsed by French monarchs.
During the reign of Louis XV (1715-74), Aubusson featured brightly colored floral motifs in bouquets, baskets inset in oval-shaped garlands, and rosettes with octagons and floral garlands. Under Louis XVI (1774-92), they often exhibited crowns of flowers and leaves and ribbons on a chocolate ground. Many pieces are neoclassical in style while others feature oriental arabesques and Chinese and Turkish-inspired elements, architectural motifs, fruit and musical instruments. The Empire (1804-15) and Restoration (1815-30) marked a return to forms by antiquity including swans and griffins, often arranged in a central medallion. "Compartment" rugs featuring geometric repeats were also in vogue.
Under the Restoration, two qualities, fine and low-end, emerged to serve a more democratic market. During the Second Empire (1852-70), "Aubusson" became the designation for these increasingly popular tapestry-woven rugs, whether originating from Aubusson or elsewhere. This period's rugs featured styles from every previous period including Louis XIV (1643-1715) with its egg-shaped motifs, spiraling acanthus and trompe l'oeil elements.
Due to their delicate nature, most surviving antique Aubussons date only from 1850-1900 and generally mimic earlier styles. Many were woven in other countries. Over the last two decades, high-quality reproductions have originated from China.
Today, contemporary and transitional designs are also being executed in the Aubusson tapestry weave.

You’d be surprised how much an area rug can change the décor and ambiance. When it comes to choosing a rug, size plays a critical role, and often times, in order to bring in the right size rug that will fill a space correctly, it’s going to be an investment.
]]>(Pictured above: Ikat Blue Rug)
Here’s what we learned from: When it comes to choosing a rug, size plays a critical role, and often times, in order to bring in the right size rug that will fill a space correctly, it’s going to be an investment.
Now, when we are space planning and pulling a room together, we typically like to start with the rug first. A good rug adds a sense of warmth and comfort to any space it’s placed in, while also bringing in some color and texture to the room.
With such a wide variety of rugs to choose from, it can be a challenge in and of itself to simply choose the right one. Because a rug is such a foundational piece when it comes to designing a space. We're sharing several rugs from Tapis Rugs & Carpet, to help guide you throughout own process for how we go about selecting a rug for a client.
A good place to start is by taking stock of the room and thinking through your style preference. What kind of flooring is in place? What style is the existing furniture? What colors are already at play? After you’ve evaluated your space, browse a few rugs online and take note of what you’re most drawn to. Do you prefer something more subtle and neutral or do you find yourself interested in the bold, colorful options? If your room is already full of color and pattern, consider a rug that’s neutral and will complement your space rather than distract from it. If you’re working with a more muted room that is full of clean lines and neutral colors, a rug that’s rich in color or pattern will help ground the room and give some depth to the overall design.
With so many different sizes and shapes of rugs that are available, it can be difficult to instinctively know exactly what your room needs, especially when you add furniture placement to the equation. Take a look at the rug size and placement guide below to help you get the look you want in your space. Keep in mind that an area rug, which is a large rug that covers the majority of floor space in a room, should fit under every key furniture piece in the room, including the sofa, armchairs, side tables and coffee table.
To get the most life out of your rug, you want to consider the room it’s going to be placed in and what its primary function is. Here’s a quick breakdown of the types of rugs that will best complement the different spaces in a home.
(Pictured Above: Custom Colour Rust Silk Rug)
Kitchen, Entryway, Dining or Mudroom — These are all areas with high foot traffic in my house, so choosing a rug that can hold up is key. You’ll want to stick to a rug that has a pile height of ¼ inch or shorter, and has a pretty smooth surface that won’t snag or pull. These are known as flat-weave or low-pile rugs, which generally offer great durability, and are easy to spot clean. I’d also suggest avoiding rugs with primarily light colors in these high traffic areas. Always look for the care instructions before cleaning, but I typically use a little bit of mild soap and warm water with a stiff brush to remove any stains or spills on these types of rugs.
(Pictured Above: Ikat Natural rug)
Living Room and Bedroom — It’s amazing how the right rug in a bedroom can create a warm and comfortable atmosphere all on its own. Rugs that have a bit of pile height, usually higher than ¼ inch, bring in that plush, cozy feel that you’d typically want in these rooms. These rugs are known as medium to high-pile rugs, and because it’s easier for dirt and debris to get caught in their fibers, they take a bit more care to keep them clean. In addition to following their care instructions, they should be shaken out once a year to remove any allergens and dirt, or should be vacuumed using a special vacuum attachment to clean each row.
I hope what I’ve shared about my own process has given you a few new things to consider when it comes time to choose your next rug!
